THE REAL FOOD PROJECT

What is it? The Real Food Project = GOFM’s Community Cooking Classes + Community Meals!

In late 2017, GOFM initiated the Real Food Project, a multifaceted set of programs that all support increased food access, nutrition, and community building in Galveston. The RFP includes Community Cooking Classes offered free or low cost to the public & to private groups, Community Dinners coordinated with partners across Galveston County.

Community cooking classes

GOFM’s Cooking Classes began in 2017 as a way to support our families using WIC vouchers. It quickly became clear that all folks could use some help in the kitchen, whether it’s practicing basic knife skills, making pasta from scratch or learning simple new recipes for in-season vegetables.

We now offer monthly classes for adults & children. Visit this page to see our upcoming classes. Sign up below for updates on upcoming classes.

Community Meal

Our Community Meals grew out of our love of sharing good food. In 2017, we provided home-cooked dishes for the students of Family Service Center’s “Incredible Years” parenting classes, and the initiative took off.

GOFM currently partners with multiple local community organizations to provide regular dinners all over the island, including Galveston Housing Authority, Galveston Independent School District, Moody Early Childhood Center, & the Family Service Center.

Our Community Meal volunteers are essential! We offer delicious & healthy meals rooted in the seasonal ingredients available from our local farmers at the market. All dinners are prepared by volunteers, and we are committed to ensuring the dinners are as zero-waste as possible.

Want to join our volunteer team? We have room for you if you love to cook for others and enjoy meeting new people.

We’re currently working on ways to incorporate volunteers here. You can fill out this form to learn more when the time arises:
