Students for Eco-Empowerment & Diversity (SEED) Internship

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market has teamed up, once again with EcoRise.org to offer a PAID internship opportunity to students. Please share this information with students and folks you think may be interested.

SCOPE OF WORK:

Interns will work closely with the GOFM staff responsible for operating our Young Gardeners Programs, Victory Gardens Programs and open-air farmers market. They will learn hands-on skills in horticulture, garden maintenance, community organizing, curriculum development, nutrition outreach and education and hone basic workplace skills to prepare them for entering a modern hybrid workplace. Specifically, from Monday to Thursday, interns will be a part of weekly gardens maintenance at all 12 gardens in GOFM’s network. On Sundays, interns will support GOFM’s Market Manager in operating the dynamic farmers market that is a community food hub.

Program Overview:

  • Part 1: Professional development and guest speaker sessions on food justice and urban gardening.

  • Part 2: Hands-on work with the Young Gardener’s Program and GOFM Projects. Concludes with a showcase presentation of individual and team projects for the community and national supporters.

Goals:

  • Enhance knowledge of green careers and diversity in the field.

  • Develop early career and 21st-century skills.

  • Foster cultural awareness, holistic well-being, and community values in environmental work.

  • Increase proficiency in climate science, green design, mindfulness, and environmental justice.

Compensation & Expectations:

  • $2,200 stipend, paid biweekly during the 8-week program.

  • 120-hour commitment (15 hours/week).

  • Successful completion of activities, workshops, check-ins, and the SEED showcase presentation.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Enrolled in a Galveston, TX public high school.

  • Minimum age of 16 with parental/guardian approval.

  • Demonstrated interest in sustainability-related careers.

  • Able to commit to 15 hours a week, including Sunday mornings and workshops.
